October 15, 2020

Dear SEM Families, Faculty and Staff,

The health and safety of the SEM community is our primary concern.  Yesterday, we were informed that a member of our community tested positive for Covid-19. Nurse Kim Skomra and I immediately contacted the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH).

The ECDOH assures us that the SEM community is at zero risk. Their timeline confirms that this person would not have been Covid-19 positive when they were last on campus. Nevertheless, we want to share this information with you.  As you may know, we cannot legally share any information about the person who tested positive.

We meet and exceed the protocols as determined by New York State Department of Health and the ECDOH. At this time, we reiterate the need for you to monitor your health and that of your family.  Doing so will allow us to remain open safely.  Please keep your daughter home if she exhibits symptoms on our Covid screening test or you notice a change in her health. We will provide a strong remote learning experience for her while she is home -- she will join our current cohort of remote learners.

I encourage you to reach out to your primary care physician if you have any concerns about possible Covid-19 exposure or symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) instructs that symptoms usually present within 2-14 days after exposure.

More information on Covid-19 can be found at these sites: the CDC, the New York State Department of Health, and the Erie County Department of Health

Please take care of yourself. We care about your health and that of everyone in the SEM community. If you have any questions, please contact School Nurse Kim Skomra at 716-885-6780. You may also call the ECDOH Covid-19 hotline at 716-858-2929.

Stay well,

Helen L. Marlette
