Hi Middle School Famlies,
Please see the information below regarding updates to the Middle School Music program at St. John School.
Middle School Music Information
Effective October 14th, 2020
I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to not begin 6th grade band this school year. With the amount of safety gear/equipment needed due to the nature of wind instruments and the inability to mix class cohorts, it is not feasible for us at St. John School at this time. We will continue to study music theory, history, and music in relation to culture this semester and then switch to playing ukulele with our school-owned set of ukuleles in January. The ukuleles are currently checked out by the St. John 5th grade class. At semester break, those will be returned to the Performing Arts Center, sanitized and quarantined while school is not in session, and then checked out in January to the 6th grade class.
*Note: Any 6th grader interested in playing a string instrument (violin, viola, cello) is welcome to either begin or continue playing at this time. Because these instruments do not use air to be played, they are less of a safety risk and can easily be integrated into class music-making. Teacher direction and instructional videos are available on Google Classroom.
7th & 8th Grade:
Due to 7th and 8th grade students’ previous knowledge of individual instrument playing, we will be playing band (wind) instruments outdoors, weather permitting, and then participating in non-playing music activities indoors. Remote learners will play their instruments on their own with teacher direction and instructional videos on Google Classroom. For in-person, indoor wind-instrument playing, Personal Protective Equipment will need to be purchased such as bell covers for brass instruments and woodwind-specific masks.
String instruments in 7th and 8th grade will continue as normal and integrated into the ensemble make-up of their class cohorts. Remote learners will play at home with teacher direction and instructional videos on Google Classroom.
*Note: Any student who is not currently playing a string or wind instrument will be assigned a percussion instrument, sanitized in-between uses, to be integrated into the class-cohort ensemble. These instruments will stay at school.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work together to create a safe musical environment for all students, staff and families at St. John.
